cartoon controversy

Dear Honourable Prime Minister,

We the undersigned, representing the Indian Cartooning community in spirit and thought , were shocked to hear the statement of our Honourabe Finance Minister Mr. Pranab Mukherji in Parialment today that it has been decided to withdraw the NCERT book carrying Cartoonist Shanker’s cartoon on Dr. Ambedkar totally.
As you know Cartoonist Shanker was a favourite of Pandidtji who loved and enjoyed the former’s work even when he himself was at the receiving end of some of them . To ban a book containing a cartoon by this doyen of illustrated humour just because it carried an old cartoon done by him in 1949 on Dr.Ambedkar and which was also much appreciated by Dr. Ambedkar himself , on some flimsy ideological grounds was tantamount to inflicting an insult to this great soul .

 While your predecessor and our first prime minister Mr. Jawaharlal Nehru took Shanker under his wings the present decision to ban his book , coming as it is during your reign as the prime minister is a matter of great pain and anguish to all of us in the cartooning field, especially considering the degree of rapport and understanding that this community has been enjoying from you all these years. We are therefore left with no option but to register our strong protest against this move to ban the entire book by addressing this letter to you.
