E P Peter who draws under the nom-de-plume of ‘PETER’ was born on 16th August 1948, at Keezhukunnu,Kottayam as the son of Pathrose and Sicily. He is married to Leelamma. He has two children, Petlee and Petson.
Peter’s first professional work was published in the Shankars’ Weekly at Delhi in 1975. The cartoon was based on a social theme. His works appeared in Caravan and Womans’ Era during those times. His first accolade came in 1976 when he received a gold medal from the then Tamil Nadu chief ministeradu, M G Ramachandran after participating in a cartoon competition conducted by Tamil weekly Indhayam Pesikirathu.
With a dream to make a career in cartooning, Peter landed in Chennai towards the end of 1975. He soon joined Dinathanthi, the famous Tamil daily in Chennai and worked there as a cartoonist till 1977 before joining budding Tamil daily Dinamalar. He is now the staff cartoonist of Dinamalar and has seen it evolve as a leading news paper .
Peter creates three cartoons on a daily bases for his newspaper comprising of an editorial cartoon, a pocket cartoon and a cartoon for the much-read satirical column titled Teekadai benchu (Tea shop bench) in Dinamalar.
In his 33-years long cartooning career with Dinamalar, he has received innumerable praise and sharp criticisms at times. His cartoon ridiculing a confrontation at the state assembly session ,in fact, was heavily criticized by the then chief minister M G Ramachandran.
Peter, the senior cartoonist holds the esteemed post of Vice Chairman of the Kerala Cartoon Academy (KCA) and he is also the member of the Indian Institute of Cartoonists. Recently he was commemorated with the prestigious K S Pillai Memorial Freelance Cartoonist Award for the year 2009
